TOXIC CHEMICAL TESTING AT NATIONAL GUARD BASE

Madison’s water utility is stepping up testing for toxic chemicals spreading from the Truax Air National Guard base.

Wisconsin State Journal says fluorinated compounds from military firefighting foam have soaked into the shallow groundwater on the base, and last year the chemicals turned up in low levels nearly a mile away.

The report says the Air National Guard has known about the contamination for at least three years but hasn’t monitored its spread.  A spokesman for the Wisconsin National Guard said it is in full compliance with all federal standards and environmental regulations.
