In 1770, the “Boston Massacre” took place. Five people were killed when British troops opened fire on a crowd of colonists.
In 1946, Winston Churchill delivered his famous “Iron Curtain Speech” in Fulton, Missouri.
In 1953, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin died at the age of 73.
In 1960, Elvis Presley returned to civilian life following two-years of service in the U.S. Army.
In 1963, country singers Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas and Hankshaw Hawkins were killed in a plane crash near Nashville, Tennessee.
In 1980, actor Jay Silverheels died at the age of 61. He is best remembered for his role as Tonto on “The Lone Ranger.”
In 1982, actor, comedian John Belushi died of a drug overdose at the age of 33. He starred in several popular projects including the television show “Saturday Night Live” and the films “Blues Brothers” and “Animal House.”
In 1989, Time Incorporated merged with Warner Communications Incorporated to form a world leading media and entertainment giant.
In 1992, the Rodney King beating trial opened in Simi Valley, California. Four Los Angeles police officers were charged with the attack, which was captured on home video.
In 1997, Switzerland announced plans to establish an almost five-billion-dollar government financed fund, using interest from its gold reserves, to compensate survivors of the Nazi Holocaust and their descendants.
In 2002, country music singer-songwriter Harlan Howard, known as “the dean of Nashville songwriters,” died at the age of 72.
In 2004, a New York jury found home living guru Martha Stewart guilty on all four charges related to her ImClone stock sale. Stewart and her broker maintained the stock sale was agreed to based on an earlier, previously established sale price. However, prosecutors said Stewart sold after receiving a tip.
In 2012, the viral video hit “Kony 2012” was released. Created by the group Invisible Children, the 29-minute documentary called for action in the efforts to capture Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony. The video logged more than 50 million views worldwide within the first four days of its release.
In 2013, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez died at the age of 58. A frequent critic of U.S. policies, Chavez allied himself with the Communist government of Cuba and the Socialist governments of Bolivia, Ecuador and Nicaragua since becoming president of the South American nation in 1999.
In 2015, actor Harrison Ford crash landed in his airplane in California.
In 2019, Forbes announced Kylie Jenner became the world’s youngest billionaire at 21 years old.
