Winter weather advisories are in effect as a snowstorm in the upper Midwest strengthens.
The first significant winter system of the season is expected to bring high winds and snow to the Dakotas and Minnesota. The Storm Prediction Center also issued a warning for excessive rain in New England through Saturday morning. Rainfall totals could reach up to four inches in some areas, increasing the risk for flash flooding.
