Wisconsin’s top sturgeon biologist is looking at a charge for lying about a scheme to send caviar to connected processors.
State prosecutors are moving ahead with misdemeanor charges against Ryan Koenigs for lying to investigators. Koenings oversaw the state’s sturgeon spearing season, he’s now been placed on leave. Investigators say Koenigs worked with caviar processors to traffic sturgeon eggs, as opposed to allowing fishermen to keep them. The investigation started back in 2017, and lasted until last year. Koenigs told investigators he simply sent the eggs to processors, rather than toss them out.
