Today is the last day most of Wisconsin can go out without a mask.
Governor Tony Evers yesterday ordered a statewide mask requirement to try to slow down the rising coronavirus numbers in the state. The mask requirement takes effect tomorrow, it applies to anyone who is five-years-old or older and applies to bars, restaurants, shops, offices, and other indoor spaces. It also applies to beer gardens and outdoor restaurants. People can face a 200 dollar fine for not wearing a mask.
The governor says local mask requirements have proven to not be enough.

Eau Claire’s health director has been asking for a statewide mask mandate for weeks. Yesterday she got her wish. City-County Health Director Lieske Giese yesterday said Governor Evers made the right decision in ordering a statewide mask requirement. Giese says one, statewide order makes it easier for people to follow the rules.
But not everyone agrees.
There is already push-back to Governor Evers’ new statewide mask requirement. Washburn County Sheriff Dennis Stuart yesterday said he will not enforce the governor’s mask mandate. The sheriff says the governor is overstepping his bounds. Washburn County has seen 17 people test positive for the coronavirus since March. No one in the county has died from it.
