Because Milwaukee Police used tear gas during this month’s protests-turned-riots, the city’s common council is saying ‘No’ to more tear gas for the Democratic National Convention.
City leaders yesterday refused to buy tear gas for the DNC in August. Milwaukee Police requested the gas months ago, but city council members have turned on the idea after two weeks of George Floyd-related protests and the violence that followed. Alderman Nik Kovac yesterday said he doesn’t think tear gas should ever be used on American citizens.
When it comes to the actual convention, the head of the Democratic Party will be in Milwaukee in August, but he’s not sure how many other delegates will make the trip.
DNC Chairman Tom Perez yesterday said the plan is to have an in-person convention in Milwaukee this summer, but just what that will look like isn’t set in stone. Perez earlier in the week said Democrats are ready to descend upon Milwaukee.
