The first court appearance for the former Minneapolis police officer charged with murdering George Floyd is scheduled today.
Derek Chauvin was arrested and jailed after he knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than eight minutes during an arrest on Memorial Day. Floyd’s death incident has sparked waves of protests and demonstrations across the country and around the world. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder. Three other officers who were involved in the arrest are also facing charges.
Those protests are expected to continue across the country and around the world now two weeks after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody.

Tens of thousands took to the streets in Washington, DC and cities coast to coast in mostly peaceful demonstrations against police brutality over the weekend. From New York to Los Angeles, the ongoing coronavirus pandemic did little to stop massive turnouts. The protests have spread to major international cities including London, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, and Tokyo.
Here locally, demonstrations and rallies remained peaceful. Friday saw a Black Lives Matter rally and March for Peace in Phoenix Park.
Over the weekend, activity continued in other areas as well. About 20 people held signs in Black River Falls on Saturday. The protesters say they want to stand in solidarity with the people who are marching in larger cities across the country. The crowd was small, police say there were no problems.
