REPUBLICANS STAY TOUGH ON CRIME

Republicans at the Wisconsin Capitol say they are sending the message that they take public safety seriously.

The Republican-led Assembly yesterday approved a series of tough on crime proposals. The most notable are a requirement that anyone who commits a crime while on probation or parole must have a hearing to see if they will go back to jail or prison, and a mandate that people convicted of certain violent felonies are not eligible for early release.

Democrats at the statehouse largely voted against the ideas, they say the proposals go against the trend in this country of criminal justice reform.
