RED LIGHT ON EVERS RED FLAG LAW

RED LIGHT ON EVERS RED FLAG LAW

Wisconsin’s governor says he wants to get guns out of the hands of people who he doesn’t think should have them. Governor Tony Evers yesterday stood with Democratic lawmakers to push for a new red flag law that would allow police or family members to ask a judge to take someone’s guns away. Evers also said he’s open to the government taking AR 15s and AK 47s away as well. Something similar to what Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke is demanding.

But here locally, the reception isn’t so warm for some people. A judge in Chippewa Falls isn’t sure that Governor Evers’ proposed red flag law would work in Wisconsin. Chippewa County Judge Steven Gibbs yesterday said the proposal, which would allow judges to take guns away from people accused of domestic violence or found to be a threat, wouldn’t matter to most criminals. The judge says bad guys don’t already follow the law. Gibbs also questions if there will be enough judges and prosecutors to handle what could be a flood of petitions to seize guns. Governor Evers made the proposal yesterday.
