Budget Deal Falls Apart

A bipartisan deal on taxes and spending in Wisconsin has stalled after failing in the senate.

The proposal passed the assembly but did not have the votes in the senate, where it was defeated 15 to 18 before the special session ended last night. It included tax breaks for workers, more money for k-12 schools, and help with property taxes. Governor Tony Evers criticized lawmakers from both parties, saying they put politics ahead of people. He warned the failure means no new funding for schools this year. It’s unclear what the next step will be as leaders weigh their options.
