Warden, Former Employees Face Charges

Nine people who worked at the prison in Waupun, including the former warden, are now facing charges in connection to two inmates’ deaths.

The sheriff in Dodge County announced the arrests and charges against former warden  Randall Hepp and other prison employees yesterday. They are being charged with misconduct in office and abuse of inmates. The two deaths the group is being charged for are part of four deaths at the prison in Waupun over the past two years. One of those deaths was ruled a homicide. Investigators say that inmate died from dehydration. The other inmate died of a stroke but guards left him in his cell for hours before checking on him.

Wisconsin lawmakers say the charges show the desperate need for changes in Wisconsin’s prison system.
