TikTok needs to “break up” with the Chinese community party. That’s what Wisconsin Republican Mike Gallagher told reporters after the House passed a bill requiring TikTok’s parent company, Chinese-owned tech giant ByteDance, to sell the social media app or see it banned in the U.S.
Gallagher said the current ownership structure is a threat to national security, as American data can be accessed by the Chinese government. Those opposed cited free speech issues with the bill. It’s not clear at this time if the legislation can clear the Senate.
