MKE Crime Numbers Show Dips

Milwaukee’s crime numbers for 2023 are down, but they’re still nowhere near where they were before the coronavirus.

The city’s police chief and mayor yesterday walked through the crime stats. Murders dropped 20 percent in 2023, and nonfatal shootings dropped four percent. But the number of murders and shootings is roughly twice what it was in 2019, before the pandemic. Overall violent crimes dropped three percent in Milwaukee, while property crimes dropped 13 percent. The biggest drop there was the decline in stolen cars. Milwaukee saw just over six thousand cars stolen in 2023, far fewer than the 10 thousand that were stolen back in 2021.
