Lawmakers Look at Changing Dismissal Laws

Republican lawmakers at the Wisconsin Capitol are looking to make it more difficult for prosecutors to dismiss certain charges.

A Senate committee today will hold a hearing on the plan to require a judge’s permission before a D.A. can dismiss certain domestic violence, assault, weapons, and violence against children charges. Current Wisconsin law gives prosecutors wide discretion in deciding which cases to dismiss. The move comes after Republicans criticized Milwaukee County’s D.A. for dismissing charges in hundreds of cases.
