Wisconsin Shakespeare Festival announces New Works Playwright Winners

Pablo Center at the Confluence works to empower artists and connect audiences through the Wisconsin Shakespeare Festival to be presented throughout the summer of 2023.

As an integral part of this inaugural season, Wisconsin Shakespeare Festival is proud to introduce the playwright winners for Improbable Fiction: A New Works Series. Playwrights from across the region and country were invited to submit one-act plays in one of three categories: “Young Voices” (for writers ages 16-24), “Diverse Perspectives (for writers who identify as BIPOC), or “Shakes-pired” (for works inspired by or an homage to Shakespeare and his plays).

After reviewing over 200 submissions, the festival is pleased to announce the three selected playwrights and their works: “Young Voices” awardee Sam Lee Victor (NJ) with A Disorderly House, which follows a pair of parents inside a dorm room after their child has been killed in an act of hate – “Diverse Perspectives” awardee Phillip Gregory Burke (NY) with He’s The First, a romantic comedy surrounding two young queer men of the African Diaspora – and “Shakes-pired” awardee Michael Waterson (CA) with The Fool of Elsinore, telling the story of the secret reasons behind the condemnation of Yorick while King
Hamlet was away at war.

Local auditions will be held soon, and actors will join teams including the playwright, a director, a dramaturg, and a stage manager as they workshop and produce the plays to be performed as part of the world premiere Improbable Fiction performances on July 29 and 30 in the Jamf Theatre at Pablo Center.
