Governor Evers wants lawmakers to change the state constitution to allow the people to vote on a new abortion law.
The governor yesterday called a special session for early next month to try and get lawmakers to approve a ballot initiative process. That would allow voters to approve binding resolutions that would create new laws. The governor says a new abortion law should be the first. Republican leaders at the Capitol say the governor’s proposal is nothing more than a political stunt.
Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu said the state’s abortion law hasn’t changed, and neither has the support for it. He says there’s nothing for lawmakers to vote on.
