Alliant Energy is keeping its coal-fired power plants after all.
The company yesterday said it is delaying the closure of its plants in Sheboygan and Portage online for at least a few more years to ensure a reliable supply of electricity. Power grid operators in the Midwest are warning about blackouts this summer because of a lack of power.
Alliant had hoped to take the plants offline and replace them with green energy projects. The company says it is still on track to cut its emissions by 50 percent by 2030.
