Civics 101: WI Tackles New Lessons

Wisconsin’s superintendent of schools is now all-about teaching civics in the state’s classrooms.

Superintendent Jill Underly initially opposed the request from lawmakers for new civics standards in the state schools, and she accused lawmakers of playing political games with students. But yesterday, Underly said she’s excited about the new classes. She’s creating a Wisconsin Civics Advisory Council to write the new lessons. Underly says Wisconsin is best served by ‘active citizens,’ and she hopes the new civics lessons teach young people to become active.
