On This Day…

On This Day…

Hello. Welcome to your weekend.

The week can sometimes feel long and stressful, which is why on Saturday morning’s we like to take it a little slower and lighter with a “scroll down memory lane” before you head forward into the day ahead.

So, grab your favorite sippin’ drink and let’s scroll….

Today is Saturday, June 5th, the 156th day of the year.  There are 209 days until the end of the year.

On this day:

In 1917, American men began registering for the draft in World War One.

In 1947, Secretary of State George C. Marshall outlined “The Marshall Plan” during a speech at Harvard University.  The plan would provide aid to war-torn Europe.

In 1968, Senator Robert F. Kennedy was shot by an assassin while campaigning for the Democratic U.S. presidential nomination in California.  He died the next day.  Gunman Sirhan Sirhan was arrested for the attack.

In 1998, five assembly plants closed after workers walked off their jobs at a General Motors parts factory near Detroit.  The strike crippled productivity nationwide for seven weeks.

In 1999, jazz singing great Mel Torme died in Los Angeles at the age of 73.

In 2000, President Clinton became the first major Western leader to address the Russian State Duma on the last day of his visit to Russia.

In 2002, Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone died at the age of 49.

In 2004, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease, former President Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States, died at his home in California at the age of 93.  He appeared in 52 films and served as the President of The Screen Actors Guild for several years before he was elected Governor of the State of California and later President of the United States.

In 2007, former White House aide Lewis “Scooter” Libby was sentenced to 30 months in prison and fined 250-thousand-dollars.  Libby was convicted in March on four felony counts of giving false statements to FBI agents and grand jurors looking into how the name of CIA operative Valerie Plame was leaked to the press.

In 2013, the British newspaper “The Guardian” reported that the National Security Agency had been collecting phone records of millions of Verizon customers under a secret court order.  Former NSA contractor Edward Snowden later revealed himself as the whistleblower who furnished “The Guardian” with the information.

In 2016, Miss District of Columbia Deshauna Barber was crowned the 65th Miss USA in Las Vegas.  She was the first active member in the military to win the title.

And that brings us to today. So, whatever plans you have for your 6.5.2021, here’s hoping you find moments for your own personal history books…and stay cool in our Wisconsin heat.
