National Medal of Honor Day

National Medal of Honor Day

Today is National Medal of Honor Day in recognition of those who have received the nation’s highest military honor.

The award was created in 1861 and was first given two years later to six members of an Army unit called Andrews Raiders, for volunteering and taking part in a Civil War raid.  Since then, more than 34-hundred medals have been awarded for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty.
