The woman in charge of Wisconsin’s division of public health is walking away from her job as coronavirus numbers spike.
Stephanie Smiley, who heads the state’s division of public health and the bureau of communicable diseases, sent a letter to co-workers at the state’s Department of Health Services this week explaining that she is leaving her job to focus on her “health and family.” Smiley is the second top public health manager to leave DHS in the past six months.
Smiley faced questions about her background and qualifications. One Republican state lawmaker noted that she went to school to be an art teacher, and has no medical degree or background in public health.
