Hello and welcome to your weekend. On this, the last Saturday in August we will look back at what the day has brought in pages of history before this one. So, grab your sippin’ drink and we can start your day with a look back at this day. Let’s take a “scroll” down memory lane.

Today is Saturday, August 29th, the 242nd day of the year.  There are 125 days until the end of the year.

On this day:

In 1958, the Air Force Academy opened in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In 1958, The Quarrymen played their first live show together. The group would later change drummers and their name and become The Beatles.

In 1964, Roy Orbison’s hit song “Pretty Woman” was released.

In 1966, the Beatles performed their last major concert before a crowd of 25-thousand at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park.

In 1967, inventor Charles Darrow died.  He created the popular game “Monopoly.”

In 1977, three people were arrested in Memphis, Tennessee, for trying to dig up the body of Elvis Presley.  Vernon Presley soon arranged to have the bodies of his son and his wife moved to the grounds of Graceland mansion.

In 1977, “The Sonny and Cher Show” aired for the final time on CBS Television.

In 1982, actress Ingrid Bergman died at the age of 67.  She starred in several classic films during her career including “Casablanca” and “Murder on the Orient Express.”

In 1990, Sandy the Dog died at the age of 16.  She was the stray dog featured in the musical “Annie.”

In 1992, the United Nations Security Council agreed to send three-thousand relief troops to Somalia to guard food shipments.

In 1995, the tape recording of police detective Mark Fuhrman shouting racial slurs was heard at the OJ Simpson murder trial.

In 1999, Hurricane “Dennis” wreaked havoc along the coast of the Carolinas, triggering evacuation of many residences along the coast. 

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina tore into the Gulf Coast on this date leaving devastating effects in the city of New Orleans, and surrounding areas.  Thousands of people who didn’t or couldn’t leave New Orleans were trapped in the flooded city without food, clean water or power.  Many took refuge at the city’s Superdome and Convention Center.  Katrina is estimated to have caused over 81-billion-dollars in damage and killed more than 15-hundred people in Louisiana. 

In 2009, Michael Jackson’s death was ruled a homicide. The cause of death was acute intoxication caused by the drug Propofol.

In 2013, hundreds of fast food workers went on strike demanding the hourly wage be 15-dollars an hour.

In 2017, US National Weather Service announced Hurricane Harvey set a rainfall record of 51-point-88 inches.
