FALL CREEK STUDENT GETS CAPITOL “A”

Senator Kathy Bernier announced that Elizabeth Thomson of Fall Creek High School successfully completed the 2019 Senate Scholar Program. Elizabeth joined high school juniors and seniors from around the State of Wisconsin to participate in a week-long program at the State Capitol.

Elizabeth and the other Senate Scholars were introduced to all aspects of the legislative process, including meeting with legislators, support agencies, legislative staff, the Governor’s office, and even a Supreme Court Justice.

The Senate Scholars put their knowledge to the test by working with legislative lawyers to draft their own bill. The week’s events culminated in a mock committee hearing where the students simulated a committee hearing on their bill.

“When students like Elizabeth come to the Capitol, pull back the curtain and see how our laws get made, it can be an empowering experience.” said Senator Bernier. “They find that lawmakers aren’t so different from them and the people they already know – parents teachers and neighbors – regular folks working to make a difference for the people they represent. Seeing that can open up new worlds for our kids.”
