Democrats are
fighting against potential limits of power against Democratic Governor-elect
Tony Evers. Democrats on the legislature’s budget committee said they
don’t trust Republican leaders as they attempt to limit the authority of
Evers. They called the Republican effort embarrassing and noted that it
shows desperation from Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald and Assembly
Speaker Robin Vos. The ways Republicans seek to limit Evers’ authority
are still unclear.
A new report shows that Wisconsin needs to come
up with over two-billion-dollars in the next budget to continue existing
programs in the state. The nonpartisan Wisconsin Policy Forum report also said the state would need that
two-billion to provide a healthy increase to schools. The report says
state revenue probably won’t increase on its own so Governor-elect Tony Evers
and lawmakers will need to either raise taxes or make cuts to maintain the
status quo. The report notes that a split legislature will also
complicate things.
