The Waukesha Christmas Parade suspect didn’t say anything during opening arguments in his trial yesterday. Darrell Brooks Jr. was disruptive and argumentative yesterday, just as he has been everyday of the trial. But he didn’t offer an opening statement to the jury. Campus Party Registry Could RSVP to UWEC

A student party registry could be coming to UW-Eau Claire.  The student senate is working with Eau Claire Police on a system to register parties, so students and not the police can deal with noise complaints.  Student Brad Heap says other schools use a similar system.  Eau Claire Police say they like the idea of giving students a chance to lower their noise before officers have to step in.  The registry would only apply to noise complaints, Eau Claire Police

Judge Rules On Ballots, No Do-Overs

 A judge says voters in Wisconsin don’t get a do-over once they’ve turned their ballot in. A judge in Waukesha yesterday overruled the Wisconsin Elections Commission’s guidance that people can vote a second time if they change their mind. Wisconsin law allows voters to ‘spoil’ their ballots and get a second ballot, but the judge says that law applies before voters turn their ballots in. Listening Sessions Continue For EC Tax Plans

There’s a lot of listening about tax increases in Eau Claire this fall.  Eau Claire Schools held their latest listening session last night for their nearly 100 million-dollar referendum.  Voters will decide in November whether to raise taxes and pay for upgrades at several Eau Claire schools. Madison Lawmaker Reacts To Marijuana Pardons

One of Madison’s Democratic lawmakers says President Biden got it right by ordering pardons for marijuana possession charges.  State Senator Melissa Agard, who is one of Wisconsin’s biggest supporters of legal marijuana, yesterday said pardoning people convicted of federal possession charges “can begin to right the wrongs of our nation’s outdated and inequitable marijuana policy.”  Agard has unsuccessfully pushed for legal marijuana here in Wisconsin for years.  She says more changes are needed at the federal level before the state will be able

WI Supper Club Damaged in Fire

A supper club in McFarland is now closed as it cleans up damage caused by a fire.  The fire department says the fire broke out yesterday evening in the kitchen at the Maple Tree Supper Club.  The fire department says flames eventually shot through the roof of the building before the fire was brought under control.  No injuries have been reported.

Chase Leads To Arrest in Menomonie

On October 5, 2022 at approximately 3:41 AM, the Menomonie Police Department (MPD) was dispatched to a report of a theft in progress on Stout Street in the City of Menomonie. Court Proceedings Hit Bumps Early

 Court proceedings are off to a rocky start again today in the trial of the man accused of killing six people at a Christmas parade in Wisconsin last year. It only took about ten minutes before Darrel Brooks, who is representing himself in the case, was removed from the courtroom.  Brooks refused to change into his suit and tie at the request of the judge.  After repeated interruptions and disruptions, he was sent to an adjacent room where he removed his shirt.

Vehicle Fire Leads to Investigation in Sawyer Co.

The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Sawyer County Coroner’s Office, confirmed the identity of the victim found near the scene of the September 23, 2022 vehicle fire on River Road in the Town of Hunter. The victim has been positively identified as 75 year old William J. Smith of Antioch IL. The incident remains under investigation by the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office, the Sawyer County Coroner’s Office and the Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations Fire Marshalls Office.
