Political Chess Sees Taxes and Child Care Move Forward

Republican lawmakers at the Wisconsin Capitol are once again trying to cut taxes. The latest effort came Friday when Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu offered to replace Governor Evers’ billion-dollar spending package for child care and workforce development with a two billion-dollar tax cut. LeMahieu says Governor Evers promised to cut taxes for the middle class, but has not yet done that. The governor wants 365 million-dollars for child care providers in the state. Lawmakers Focus on Student Attendance

Lawmakers at the Wisconsin Capitol are turning their focus to truancy. The Speaker’s Task Force On Truancy will hold a meeting later this morning. Two managers from Milwaukee Public Schools have been invited to speak to lawmakers about the problems of keeping kids in school. MPS’s manager of school social work and community services will be the first to testify. Lawmakers say they’re looking to see if there is anything the state can do to help keep kids in school,

Bob’s House Fetches Plans For New Facility

Bob’s House For Dogs in Eau Claire may no longer just be for dogs.  Owners Travis and Amy Quella started Bob’s House For Dogs 15 years ago. They say they’ve gotten so successful that they need to expand. The Quellas have bought 40 acres of land just outside of Elva, and plan to build a new facility to house even more dogs. But they’re also thinking about adding space for cats. The hope is to raise nearly two million dollars

Rain Measures Up

Southeast Wisconsin finally got the good soaking that it needed, though it’s a little late. The National Weather Service just last week’s rain dropped about two inches or more across the area.  Port Washington saw the most with nearly three-and-a-half inches of rain, while Milwaukee’s airport saw one of the smallest totals and just under two inches. The rain that fell between Wednesday and Saturday was one of the longest soaking rains in southeast Wisconsin in months.

All Aboard!

We now know when to stand by the tracks to get a glimpse of the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train. The railroad last week said the train will move through southeast Wisconsin December 3rd and December 4th. The first stop will be in Sturtevant, followed by a stop in Caledonia. There are then stops in Wauwatosa, Heartland, and Oconomowoc. The train will then move on its way towards the Twin Cities over the next couple of days. The holiday train has

Marching Bands Hit High Note

Close to three-dozen marching bands from high schools across Wisconsin filled UW-Whitewater’s Perkins Stadium Saturday for the 38th annual State Marching Band Championships.  The young musicians put on a show for the ears and the eyes.  The bands brought in costumes, props, and choreography that made each performance unique.  Perkins Stadium at UW-Whitewater has hosted the Wisconsin Marching Band Championships since 1987.

WI Couples Celebrates 78th Anniversary

A Lafayette County couple celebrated their 78th wedding anniversary this weekend.  Bernie and Juanita Rear celebrated with family and friends at their home in Argyle on Saturday.  The high school sweethearts were married in 1945 and have five children.  When they get together with the three sons and two daughters and their spouses, and their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren the family is more than 60 people.

High Price Tag to Fly High

Flying out of Madison is more expensive than anywhere else in the U.S. A new study released Friday shows that Dane County Regional Airport is the nation’s most expensive for domestic departures. The average cost for a domestic flight is 538 dollars. MSN and an airport in Anchorage, Alaska are the only ones where the average cost to fly out is above 500 dollars.

WI Teen Killed in Shooting

The mother of a 15-year-old Madison girl who was shot and killed this week has set up a GoFundMe to support her family. Kyesha Miller was killed and three other teens were injured Tuesday when four people got out of a vehicle on Madison’s east side Tuesday and opened fire. Police say they found nearly 50 shell casings outside the Harmony at Grandview Commons apartment complex where the teens were shot. Kyesha’s mother Karnika Miller said the family’s larger bills
