Proposed Dunn County Budget Includes Property Tax Drop

The Dunn County Board of Supervisors in November will consider a 2024 budget that would lower the tax (mill) rate used to compute a homeowner’s tax bill by more than 14 percent.  The county tax rate for 2024 would be $4.97 per $1,000 of equalized value, compared to this year’s rate of $5.80 for 2023. The proposed 2024 total budget of $99.45 million includes a county property tax levy of $23.7 million, an increase of $214,521 from 2023.  The County Board will hold a public hearing on the budget at 7 p.m. Nov. 14 in room 054 of the

Olivia Knabel earned her Bachelor’s of Arts in Public Relations, and a minor in Journalism and Marketing. Man Identified in Officer Involved Shooting

Investigators say the man shot at a Germantown middle school had no connection to the school at all. The state’s Department of Justice yesterday said the man shot and killed by Germantown Police Monday night was driving a car with out of state plates, and simply broke down near the school. The DOJ is not identifying the man, or saying where he came from. Investigators say the man tried to get into Kennedy Middle School, but the doors were locked.

Jury Seated in Case of Eye Drop Poisoning

The jury is seated in the trial for a Pewaukee woman accused of killing her friend with eye drops.  Jessy Kurczewski is facing homicide charges in Waukesha County.  Police say she poisoned her friend with eye drops in 2018.  They also say she stole nearly 300-thousand dollars from the friend.  Kurczewski says her friend was a drug addict and had suicidal thoughts.  Both sides offered their opening arguments yesterday.  Her trial could last as long as a month.

Redistricting Maps Lead to Opposition

Unions and advocates turned out yesterday to oppose Wisconsin’s plan to change how the state draws its political map. SEIU and Voces de la Frontera flooded the Wisconsin Capitol yesterday to demand that lawmakers not adopt a commission to handle redistricting. EC City Clerk Could Move to State Role

Eau Claire’s former election manager could soon be one of Wisconsin’s newest election managers. Governor Tony Evers yesterday appointed former Eau Claire city clerk Carrie Riepl to the state’s Elections Commission. Riepl spent five years handling Eau Claire’s elections before moving on to become the city’s HR director. The job is not her job yet, however. The Wisconsin Senate still has to confirm her.

Human Trafficking Task Force Meets in Oshkosh

The Speaker’s Task Force On Human Trafficking is in Oshkosh today to hear from police and prosecutors.  The task force is looking to see what the legislature can do to stop the trafficking of people, specifically children, and whether any new state laws are needed.  The DA from Manitowoc County, along with police officers from Oshkosh and Green Bay are expected to testify.  Members of the state Department of Justice’s human trafficking task force are also expected to speak.

WI DNR Boss Steps Down

Wisconsin’s DNR boss is leaving. Natural Resources Secretary-designee Adam Payne told Governor Evers in a letter that he is resigning after just ten months on the job. Payne will leave the DNR next week. He said his time at the agency has been bittersweet. Payne says he is leaving to spend more time with his family.

Bill Aims to Honor Native Tribes

A bill is being considered at the Wisconsin State Capitol that would name a stretch of I-90 after Wisconsin’s Native American code talkers. Code talkers used their tribal languages for secret communication during wartime to help the U.S. Army during World Wars I and II. The bill would dedicate a stretch of I-90 between La Crosse and Tomah after the infamous code talkers, naming it the “Ho-Chunk World War II Code Talkers Memorial Highway.”
