A judge wants a doctor to decide whether the suspect in the deadly stabbing at the Do Dodge Inn is fit enough to stand trial. An Eau Claire County judge has ordered a competency hearing for  44-year-old Anthony Jackson. He’s accused of stabbing a man to death earlier this month. Trees, yes. Christmas lights, no. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is reminding people about the post-Christmas recycling rules. The DNR says each local recycling program will have its own rules, but in general you can recycle most wrapping paper. Bows, ribbons, and shiny wrapping paper should be thrown away. Evers Reflects on 2024 Successes

Wisconsin’s governor is ending his year with a pat on his own back. Governor Tony Evers yesterday listed all of the successes Wisconsin has seen during his Year of the Worker. They include an ordered pay raise for frontline home care workers, a new AI task force, and new programs to boost apprenticeships across the state. The governor also pointed to Wisconsin’s continued low unemployment. Evers is not saying if he’s planning a theme for 2025.

Man Facing Charges in Deadly Hit and Run

A man is arrested and accused of a hit-and-run that killed a Dunn County Correctional Officer and injured four others.  Prosecutors say Mark Sokolowski ran a stop sign while driving through the intersection of Highway Twelve and County Highway E, crashing into an SUV.  The Sergeant who responded to the crash recognized the victim as a correctional officer.  Sokolowski and three other people in his car were injured.  He could face 25 years in prison if found guilty.

Madison Reviews Improperly Processed Ballots

Almost 200 general election ballots were improperly processed in Madison.  The City Clerk’s Office says the ballots were found while cleaning up after the election, still in sealed bags.  Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway says a review of the City’s election procedures is underway so the same thing won’t happen again.  The Clerk’s Office says there weren’t enough ballots to change the outcome of any races or referendums, but letters will be sent to affected voters apologizing for the oversight.

We have an update on a recent incident in Dunn County: The operator of the vehicle involved in a recent Elk Mound crash was transported to a local hospital following the crash. On December 23, 2024, the Dunn County Medical Examiner’s Office reported that the operatordied at the hospital due to complications from injuries suffered in the crash. On Wednesday, December 25, 2024, at 6:54 p.m., the Barron County Sheriff’s Department 911 center received a call of two people and a UTV that went through the ice near the Pokegama Boat Landing east of Chetek. Bird Flu Confirmed in Burnett Co. Flock

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has identified a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI H5N1) in a commercial poultry flock in Burnett County. DATCP and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) animal health officials are working together in a joint incident response.
