New Police Chief Named in Chippewa Falls

Chippewa Falls has a new police chief. Lieutenant Ryan Douglas took over as chief earlier this week. He’s spent his entire career here in Chippewa Falls, first with the county, then with the city starting back 2002. Douglas says he wants to continue building relationships in the community, and wants to get more training for his officers. He’ll be sworn-in as chief next week.

Real Hires Planned for UW A.I. Focus

UW-Madison is looking to hire hundreds of new faculty members to drive new research at the school. Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin told university regents yesterday that the first round of hiring will be focused on AI. Mnookin says the Madison campus is looking for ‘Audacious, interdisciplinary inquiry leading to groundbreaking discovery.’ The UW says it is looking to hire as many as 150 new faculty members over the next three to five years. Wisconsin’s governor isn’t saying what he will do with his political maps because he doesn’t really believe that Republicans will actually approve them. Wisconsin Democrats aren’t sure if they will support a plan to cut taxes for middle class families in the state. Democratic state Representative Tip McGuire from Kenosha yesterday said the two-point one billion-dollar tax cut for middle class families could leave the state short. WI Sees Rise in Title Fraud, Odometer Rollbacks

There’s an increase in odometer rollbacks and title fraud cases in Wisconsin from out-of-state businesses advertising as wholesale dealers. The state Department of Motor Vehicles says 32 dealers have had their licenses taken away in the past two months for business facilities that hadn’t been maintained. Two of the dealers rolled back more than six-million miles between 64 cars, while others were giving out false titles. Wholesale licenses have increased nearly twelve-hundred-percent since 2018.

Harbor Investments Make Splash

Eight Wisconsin harbor maintenance projects will be getting ten-million dollars from the state. Governor Tony Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation say the projects will help strengthen the state’s transportation network. Three-point-eight million will go to the City of Superior rebuild two dock walls, and Manitowoc will get more than 560-thousand to dredge the Manitowoc River. Other projects include adding cranes and stabilizing shorelines. Applications for the next round of Harbor Assistance Program grants are due on August 1st.

WI Cities See State Money for Roads

Wisconsin cities are getting more than 138-million dollars for state roadways from the state Department of Transportation. About 134-million will be shared between city, village, and town governments for transportation aids. Four-point-two million will go to 116 cities that qualify for addition funding to connect highways, and Milwaukee County will get the remainder of the money for expressway policing. This is the first quarterly payment local governments will get – this year they’ll get 536-million total.

Play Paused Ahead of Park Renovations

Parks and Recreation is removing the playground structure in Marshfield’s Braem Park due to  deteriorating conditions. In 2023, we it was discovered a few major broken and  deteriorated pieces and have received citizens’ concerns about the poor condition.  Since the playground in the park will be replaced in 2025, officials have decided to remove it now and not spend money on fixing the current structure. The Wisconsin-only lotto game, Megabucks, had a mega winner on Wednesday night. A winning $3.5 million ticket was sold by Discount Smokes and Spirits on 2111 E.
