A new factory will bring jobs to about 200 people in Portage. The Wisconsin Battery Company started construction at a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday. The company says the plant will start with 75 openings when the plant opens next year but will hire dozens more each quarter until it gets to full staffing capacity. WBC says it focuses on technologies that replace typical battery chemicals with more sustainable options.

Former Superior police officer Gregory Swanson pleaded guilty to two charges of homicide by drunk driving yesterday. He resigned as an officer about a month after the crash back in 2021 that killed 23-year-old Michael Evans of Eau Claire. Evans’ baby died a few days later. Swanson is looking at 10 years in prison when he is sentenced in July.
