Marine researchers say they have discovered over 100 new species during an expedition off the coast of Chile. During the Schmidt Ocean Institute expedition, researchers identified species including deep-sea corals, glass sponges, sea urchins, and squat lobsters. Researchers also used an underwater robot to map the seafloor and found four previously unknown underwater mountains. A researcher who led the quest says the amount of new species they found is “mind-blowing” and the expedition exceeded their hopes. The Schmidt Ocean Institute

WI Home Sales See Uptick

Home sales in Wisconsin are up for the first time since December 2021.  Experts say the lead cause is baby boomers putting their house on the market and millennials looking to move in.  January 2024 sales are up by just over ten-percent compared to last year.

Proposed Bill Address Treatment, Procedures

A bill proposed in Congress would change procedures around the treatment of incarcerated pregnant people.  An estimated 58-thousand people are incarcerated every year.  The use of physical restraints are common despite having proven health risks according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.  A bill being proposed would change that along with giving access to STI treatment, postpartum depression screenings and services, and other critical care.

DNA Leads to Arrest in Bike Path Assault Case

A man from Minnesota is found guilty of a 2005 sexual assault on a Madison bike path. Addison Yang of Eagan, Minnesota, was found guilty on three counts tied to the assault. He assaulted the victim after using a knife to threaten her. Yang was found as a suspect through DNA collected on the victim’s sexual assault examination kit.

City May Purchase Old GM Plant

The City of Janesville may be purchasing the old General Motors plant. City Council is scheduled to meet on Monday to discuss a relocation order that would give the city ownership. City Manager Kevin Lahner says there will have to be cleanup efforts before any work happens, since the site is contaminated. It would be months before the plant became city property and years before construction begins.

Emergency Funding Awaits Gov. Evers Signature

Governor Evers will now decide if emergency rooms in the Chippewa Valley will get 15 million-dollars in state aid. The State Assembly approved the plan yesterday. The idea is to repurpose money that was earmarked for Eau Claire’s HSHS hospital. That hospital, along with the hospital in Chippewa Falls, and several other clinics throughout the area are set to close in April. Judge Sentences Teen in Deadly Crash

The teenager who killed two people and hurt a third in a crash near Rice Lake two years ago will spend eight months in jail. A judge in Barron County yesterday sentenced Troy Huehn Jr. to 12 years probation, which includes an eight month jail stint. Huehn was 16-years-old and didn’t have a driver’s license at the time of the wreck. He pleaded guilty to homicide by negligent driving. Prosecutors dismissed more serious reckless homicide charges.
