Park Falls Shooting Under Investigation

Authorities in far northwestern Wisconsin say they have a person in custody for a deadly weekend shooting in Park Falls. It happened Saturday afternoon. Police say they found the dead body and a handgun at the scene. Investigators say the person had been shot several times. There’s no word on an ID for either the victim or the suspect, those details could come later today.

Armed Robbery Suspect Sentenced

It’s prison time for an armed robbery suspect in Chippewa Falls. A judge sentenced 24-year-old Elijah Johnson to six-and-a-half years in prison. He was convicted of kicking his way into an apartment in the 700 block of Harding Avenue in January of last year. The person who lived there said Johnson pointed a gun at him, then took his PlayStation Five.

Crews Respond to Bloomer Field Fire

Bloomer was one of several communities across Wisconsin to see a weekend wildfire. Crews responded Saturday to a farm field off of 87th Street. The field burned, and did some damage. There are no reports of any injuries. Firefighters say Saturday’s high winds helped fuel the fire.

Fire Danger High

The Department of Natural Resources says there’s either a high, or extremely high fire danger across the entire state. Only two counties in far northern Wisconsin, Vilas and Oneida, are not included. The DNR says dry brush and high weekend winds made for perfect conditions for wildfires. In fact, firefighters dealt with more than 30 fires across the state Saturday and Sunday.

WI DNR Looks to Recruit Conservation Wardens

They are hiring at the Wisconsin DNR. The Department of Natural Resources on Friday announced that it is now recruiting a class of conservation wardens for 2025. The department says it is looking to hire 10 new wardens. If you are interested you need to be at least 21-years-old, and already have or are planning to get an associates degree. Crash Escalates, State Investigates Shooting

 State investigators are now handling Friday’s officer-involved shooting in Grand Chute. Police there say things started with a car crash, and escalated from there. Officers say a man started fighting with them. One officer tried to use a Taser, and when that failed, another officer shot the man. Police say the wounded man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The state’s Department of Justice is investigating the shooting.

Gov. Evers Seeks More UW Funding

Wisconsin’s governor wants even more money for the University of Wisconsin. Governor Evers on Friday said he’s going to ask the legislature for the largest investment in the UW in over 20 years, though he didn’t have a specific price tag. The governor’s declaration comes after the university last week released financial updates for the campuses in Green Bay, Oshkosh, Parkside, Platteville, River Falls, Superior, and Whitewater. Stamps Could Cost More

It may soon cost more to mail a card or letter. The U.S. Postal Service is asking for approval to raise the price of stamps for the second time in six months.  If the change gets the green light, a first class stamp will jump from 68-cents to 73-cents in July.

WI Honors Vel Phillips

A statue of the first black statewide elected official, Vel Phillips will be unveiled in June. The four year project is being done to honor Phillips, the first black woman to graduate the University of Wisconsin-Madison Law School and go on to become a Common Council member and a state judge.
