Great American Outdoors Act Turns 4, National Parks Wave Fees

Hundreds of National Parks across the U.S. are waiving entrance fees on Sunday. August 4th marks four years since the Great American Outdoors Act was signed into law. It provides billions of dollars over five years for national park maintenance. Over 400 parks will have free admission. That also includes national battlefields, monuments, and beaches.

Wisconsin Launches First Home Energy Rebates Program

The U.S. Department of Energy announced Friday Wisconsin has launched its first Home Energy Rebates program, and is the first state in the nation to launch the program’s Home Efficiency portion.  The energy-saving measures will save American households up to $1 billion annually in energy costs and support jobs in construction, manufacturing and other sectors.  Wisconsin’s launch is part of the Biden-Harris administration’s nationwide initiative to provide $8.8 billion in federal funding for states, territories, and tribes to lower energy

WI Tuition Promise Announced

Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman announced the Wisconsin Tuition Promise will fund a new section of students starting in fall 2025.  Under the tuition promise, students who come from families earning $55-thousand or less annually will be able to attend 11 UWs without having to pay tuition or fees. WI Woman Sentenced in Case of Poisoning Husband

A Wisconsin woman who tried to poison her husband’s coffee has  learned her fate.  Fifty-one-year-old Amanda Chapin has been sentenced to three years in prison followed by three years of extended supervision.  She pleaded no contest last month to a charge of  first-degree reckless endangering.  Prosecutors say Chapin put animal euthanasia drugs in her husband’s coffee three times in 2022, leaving the 70-year-old man in a coma.  Chapin told police her husband became sick after taking Ivermectin because he didn’t

Campaign Confirms; VP Harris to Visit EC

Kamala Harris and her as-yet-to-be-announced running mate will visit Wisconsin next week.  Her campaign office confirms a visit is planned in Eau Claire on Wednesday.  The vice president and presumptive Democratic presidential candidate is expected to name her pick for VP by Tuesday.  Harris has visited Wisconsin five other times this year. Earthquake Registered in Door Co.

  The U.S. Geological Survey is confirming an earthquake in Door County.  They say it hit early this morning in Lake Michigan, which is 24-miles southeast of Sturgeon Bay.  The quake measured two-point-nine on the Richter scale.  The USGS says it received 24 reports from people who say they felt the earthquake this morning shortly after 9:00.

Private Well Owners in Eau Claire Co. Considered for Free Drinking Water PFAS Testing

The Eau Claire City-County Health Department is partnering with researchers from UW-Eau Claire to offer a limited number of free private well water tests for PFAS, commonly referred to as “forever chemicals.” PFAS, or perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are found in everyday items like fast food wrappers, nonstick cookware, cosmetics, water-resistant clothing, and household stain repellants. Friday Feel Good: Finding Home

Suspect Found Not Competent to Stand Trial

The man accused of fondling two teenage boys near the Duncan Creek bike path last year will not be going to trial. A judge yesterday found Cody Blassingame not competent enough for trial. He was homeless and hanging-out near the bike path when police say he grabbed two boys and made sexual suggestions. He is being treated at a state hospital, and prosecutors say he likely will be found competent enough for trial sometime in the future.
