Investigators say students are to blame for last summer’s collapse of the swimming pier at Lake Mendota. UW-Madison on Friday released its report into the collapse at the Howard Temin Lakeshore Path. Federal Rules Won’t Affect Much for WI PFAS Efforts

The Wisconsin DNR says new federal PFAS rules won’t change much for a clean-up in the state. The Department of Natural Resources on Friday said it is evaluating the new federal rules on PFAS pollution. Those rules declared two PFAS chemicals as ‘hazardous substances’ under the federal Superfund program. That will allow states to tap into federal dollars to help clean those areas. Get Ready to Hop Midways, New Law Allows Multiple Fairs

Basil Recall Affects Wisconsin

You’ll want to check your fresh basil to make sure it’s safe to eat. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services on Friday said Wisconsin is among the 29 states included in a fresh basil recall. The basil came in Infinite Herbs two-and-a-half ounce packages from Trader Joes. The fear is that the basil has been linked to a salmonella outbreak. Netflix is reporting record profits in its first-quarter earnings report.  The streaming giant tallied nine-point-four billion dollars in revenue and gained over two-point-five million subscribers, well above estimates.  Despite this, the company’s revenue is expected to decline next quarter.  After the earnings report was released Netflix shares fell slightly, but remain high.  The streamer has been regaining ground since their stock price cratered in 2022, before the company experienced its best year ever in terms of revenue, profits and subscriber

Down On the (New) Boardwalk

A new boardwalk in Eau Claire is now open.  A ribbon cutting ceremony was held yesterday to commemorate the occasion.  The Half Moon Lake boardwalk has three boardwalk features going out along the wetlands of Braun’s Bay and Half Moon Lake.  Also now open is the Half Moon Lake boardwalk trail that connects Half Moon Lake with Rod and Gun Park.  The trail is also wheelchair and disability accessible and you can learn more and see the story on WEAU

WI Debt Dips to 25 Year Low

The State of Wisconsin’s debt is the lowest it’s been in 25 years. The new 2023 report by the Wisconsin Policy Forum says state reserves are at the highest level on record, peaking at six-point-seven-billion last June. The WPF also says the state is in a good place to pay short-term bills, and the jobless fund balance has recovered. The report says, despite these improvements, the state’s transportation fund borrowing could be a concern.
