Campus Protests Continue

There will be no police action against pro-Palestine protestors on UW-Madison’s campus for the next 24 hours. Students met with UW-Madison’s Chancellor, Jennifer Mnookin today on the fourth day of protests. The protestors have been staying in tents on campus, which the university says is a violation of school policy.  Police arrested 34 people and cited four at the Dane County Jail yesterday, after they were instructed by the University to take down the tents. All Aboard! New Amtrak Service Planned

Wisconsin is getting more Amtrak service. Amtrak yesterday announced new train service between Chicago and Minneapolis-St. Paul. That means two trains each day that will connect Milwaukee, Columbus, Portage, the Wisconsin Dells, Tomah, and La Crosse. One train will leave from Milwaukee in the morning, and the other will leave from the Twin Cities during the middle of the day. Amtrak is calling the new service the Borealis Line. It begins May 21st.

WI Congressman Howls in Wolf Debate

The Northwoods’ congressman says he has the science on his side in the on-going debate over what to do about the gray wolf. Congressman Tom Tiffany this week got his plan to take the gray wolf off the endangered species list through the House. DNR Reels In Fishing Reminders

Add this to the list of reminders as fishing season opens in Wisconsin. The DNR yesterday warned fishermen not to recycle their old fishing lines in their regular recycling. Those lines can get caught in the recycling machines, Instead, the DNR says bag-up your old fishing line and take it to a special fishing line collection center. Sporting good stores usually have those. As for lead weights, the DNR says those can be recycled, but only if your recycler accepts

UW Madison Police Arrest Protestors

UW-Madison Police report dozens were arrested during a standoff between protesters and officers Wednesday morning.  Police came onto campus and reportedly took down tents at the protest site on campus. The university warned protestors camping in tents would not be allowed on its property.  Governor Tony Evers says he’s getting updates from university staff at least hourly.

Trump Rallies in WI

Former President Trump is holding campaign rallies today after a warning of jail time if he violates his gag order.  The judge in his New York hush-money case ruled yesterday Trump violated his gag order when he talked about witnesses in the case, and warned him of jail if he does it again.  Court is in recess today, and Trump is using the time to hold rallies in the swing-states of Wisconsin and Michigan.

Invasive Species Found in Lake Menomin

An invasive species affecting lake populations is found in Western Wisconsin.  The state Department of Natural Resources says zebra mussels were found in Lake Menomin in Menomonie.  The mussels can reduce plankton, algae, and fish populations.  The department is asking that anglers keep their boats and equipment clean and drain all water to prevent spreading the invasion.  The DNR says boat ramps are being monitored.
