Bird lovers in Western Wisconsin are celebrating World Migratory Bird Day.  The Trempealeau National Refuge in the Village of Trempealeau had a birding festival on Saturday.  Trempealeau is located off the Mississippi River and officials say the refuge is “in a great location to provide habitats for birds that are migrating.”  They added that it provides visitors an opportunity to learn about bird protection.  The festival included presentations and bird watching, and also allowed visitors to watch the bird banding

Search for Menomonie Robbery Suspect Continues

On Friday, May 10, 2024, at approximately 9:36 p.m., the Menomonie Police Department responded to an armed robbery at 2302 S. Broadway Street / Circle C & Deli. The initial investigation showed a male subject entered the business and brandished a machete style knife toward the store clerk. Upgrades for Barron Co. Response Teams

Link Ford helps increase law enforcement safety in Barron County. With the help of a substantial financial donation from Link Ford of Rice Lake, the Barron/Rusk Emergency Response Team has purchased new tactical helmets that will increase safety and make sure our deputies return safe to their families. These new helmets have improved capability, are more comfortable and are able to better fit with our tactical equipment used by the team. The current helmets will be transferred to the non-ERT

Victim Remembered, Memorial Held for Robinson

Family and friends are remembering a Milwaukee woman who would have turned 20 yesterday, a month after she was murdered.  A memorial service was held Friday for Sade Robinson, who was murdered in early April and her body was dismembered.  Robinson was a criminal justice major at Milwaukee Area Technical College and was set to graduate next weekend.  Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson was among those at the service held at the Baird Center.  Maxwell Anderson has been charged with murder

Senator Baldwin Joins Bill to Ban Water Beads

Senator Tammy Baldwin is joining two other senators to introduce a bi-partisan bill to ban water beads.  The bill is named “Esther’s Law” for a ten-month-old Wisconsin girl who died after swallowing one.  The small, colorful balls can be sold as toys and in craft kits and can grow up to 100 times their original size when exposed to water. No Go for No Labels Party on WI Ballot

Wisconsin voters will not see a line for the No Labels Party on the ballot this fall.  The party this week asked the Wisconsin Elections Commission to remove its name from the November ballot.  No Labels couldn’t find a candidate, so there’s no name to go along with the party.  The Election Commission is expected to officially remove No Labels next week.

Sheriff Hakes Shares Course Experiences

The course in leadership development was funded 100% by federal tax dollars through the National Institute of Corrections. “WI” Have a WI-nner! WI Civics Games King Crowned

A team from Denmark High School took first place in the 2024 Wisconsin Civics Games state championship Friday at the Capitol in Madison. Eighteen teams from 15 schools participated in the competition, presented by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation. It was Denmark’s first trip to the finals. The winning team, advised by social studies teacher Zack Olson, was comprised of Henry Pahlow (captain), Lydia Flanigan, Ben Lindsley, Aiden Nelsen, Collin Trepanier and Cherry Weis. Each will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship

Unlicensed Daycare Owner Faces Charges

An unlicensed daycare owner from Wisconsin is under arrest and charged with child abuse. Prosecutors say a one-year-old left in Meagan Valley’s care was taken to the hospital with severe burns in the Town of Caledonia. His parents say Valley called them less than two hours after they dropped him off to say he was having an allergic reaction and had hives.
