Madison Drops Speed Limits

The city of Madison is dropping the speed limit on nine more roads as part of its Vision Zero plan for this year. The mayor’s office made the announcement last week. Almost all the roads on this year’s list will go from 35 miles-per-hour, to 30. Two roads, Regent Street and Sheboygan Avenue, will go from 30 to 25, and Campus drive will go from 40 to 35 miles-per-hour. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway says the numbers show that lower speed limits

Cause of Durand Fire Under Investigation

Everyone made it out of a fire at an apartment complex in Durand. Firefighters say they got the call about the fire about 8 p.m. Saturday. Crews from Durand and other Pepin County communities assisted in the fight. Investigators are not saying what caused that fire.

Woman Dies in Paddle Board Accident

A Minnesota woman is dead after she fell off her paddle board in northwestern Wisconsin late last week. The Burnett County Sheriff’s Office says 35-year-old Jessica Lindberg from Prior Lake, Minnesota died when she fell off her board in Crooked Lake last Thursday. Boaters say she went into the water, and could not get out. A kayaker was able to grab Lindberg, but it was too late.

WI Warden Walks Away

The warden at the prison in Waupun is walking away. The Wisconsin State Journal obtained an email from Warden Randall Hepp to workers at the prison that said Hepp is resigning, effective immediately. The prison in Waupun is dealing with a number of problems, including a months-long lockdown and now a federal investigation. There is no indication that Hepp himself is looking at any charges related to the investigation, but several other prison workers have already resigned or been fired

WI Ballot Envelopes Sent Back to Court

Wisconsin’s new absentee ballot forms are due in a northern Wisconsin courtroom this week. A judge in Marinette County will hear arguments against the new absentee ballot envelopes that double as both a ballot envelope, and a request for an official absentee ballot. The Wisconsin Elections Commission approved the new envelopes earlier this year, but critics say those envelopes could end-up forcing people to commit voter fraud. Library Connects Community to Public Benefits

Eau Claire’s library is now offering a way to connect with public benefits. The L.E. Phillips Library is allowing volunteers with Western Dairyland, Workforce Development, Lutheran Social Services Western Dairyland, Workforce Development and Lutheran Social Services to work out of the library and sign people up for food stamps and state insurance. Traffic Stop Leads to 7th OWI

Dana Jeffrey Wobschall, 68 years of age, from Mauston Wi has been arrested by the Wisconsin State Patrol Spooner Post for operating a motor vehicle under the influence, 7th offense. On 5/31/24, at approximately 6:57pm, a Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper conducted a traffic stop on USH 53 northbound at Shell Creek Road for an improper turn.
