Jimmy Vs. Phil: Dueling Groundhogs

Punxsutawney Phil may have predicted six more weeks of winter, but Wisconsin’s Jimmy the Groundhog says different.  Yesterday at 7:11 a.m., it was declared that Jimmy is calling for an early spring.  Revelers rejoiced and local meteorologists gave Jimmy a nod of approval during the celebration.  Yesterday marked the 77th annual Groundhog Prognostication in Sun Prairie. Deadly Crashes Under Investigation

Two Wisconsin drivers are dead following separate crashes into snow plows over the weekend.  The first of the collisions was reported on Highway 29, in Chippewa County, around 4:00 a.m. Sunday.  The Wisconsin State Patrol says a 19-year-old man died at the scene after his Jeep Compass slammed into the back of a county plow truck.  Another driver passed away after hitting a stopped plow on U.S. 41 in Oconto County about four hours later, according to the state patrol.

Parking Issues in Overdrive in Downtown Eau Claire

Parking challenges continue in Downtown Eau Claire.  This, after the abrupt closure of the Four Corners parking lot at Barstow Street and Grand Avenue.  Now, students, people working and those visiting downtown are missing out on 32 available parking spots in a prime location.  City council says the closure of the garage and the ongoing parking conversation is on the agenda for upcoming meetings.

Local EMS Feeling Strain of Shortages

The Chippewa County community is feeling the strain of the national shortage of EMS workers.  Fire Chief and EMS Director for Boyd-Edson-Delmar and Stanley Fire Departments Ron Patten says EMS calls have doubled over the past 15 years.  With one full-time employee, Patten says they rely on volunteers, but are seeing less and less people willing to do that.  Patten suggests more funding for full-time staff and more ambulances would be a great start to fulfill the need for more

On February 2, 2025, at approximately 4:07 am a Chippewa County Highway Department truck was performing winter maintenance on Hwy 29 Eastbound at Stanley when it was struck from behind by a 2017 Jeep Compass. As a result of injuries sustained in the crash the male driver, 19 year old Treyton Douglas Tessmer from Withee passed away. Black History Month Begins

Black History Month starts today. In 1976 the month was set aside to reflect on both the history and teachings of African Americans whose contributions to society were sometimes left out of the history books. But the celebration of Black History began even earlier than 1976. Educator Carter G. Woodson is the man credited with bringing Black History Month to prominence. During the 1920s, Woodson launched Negro History Week in February to promote the diversity of Black achievement in America.

America’s Dairyland Gets Cheesy

Cheese brine is being used to de-brie snow and ice off the roads in Monroe. Green County Highway Commissioner Chris Narveson says the liquid is made up of 23-percent salt and is better for the environment. He says, “it doesn’t actually melt the snow, its the brine that melts the snow.” The County has already used over 75-thousand gallons of the cheese brine.
