Health Officials Monitor Bird Flu in Barron Co.

Both the state and Barron County’s public health managers are keeping a close eye on the people who worked at the poultry farm that saw Wisconsin’s first human case of the bird flu.  The state’s Department of Health Services reported this week that a man who works at the farm has come down with the flu.  No one is sure how or when.  The man, whose identity has not been released, is being treated and monitored.  DHS says the man

Authorities Warn of Suspicious Behavior

There are pictures of the men who Chippewa Falls Police say were being inappropriate around some kids. Officers say the men were seen both at the local McDonalds and at a Kwik Trip. Police say they were acting inappropriately and suspicious, including taking a picture with someone’s child. Officers believe the two have left the area. Funding Pulled for UW Projects

Lawmakers are voicing frustration with the UW for the latest move on university construction. The state Senate this week voted down about 70 million-dollars in funding for a handful of construction projects at the university. Republican leader Devin LeMaheiu said Republicans scuttled the money because the university refused to answer their questions, and seemed to be trying to rush the construction projects through without being honest. Man Found Guilty of Sexual Assault

A Chippewa County man is found guilty of sexual assault. Raymond Buchli of Arizona was found guilty by of a jury of four out of five charges. Prosecutors say the victim was asleep then he began assaulting them. Buchli will be sentenced in Chippewa County in March.

Bird Flu Jumps to Humans

A case of bird flu could have been detected in one Wisconsinite. The Department of Health Services says the person from Barron County got a presumptive positive result. The case comes after a flock tested positive for bird flu, also in Barron County. DHS says the person was in contact with the infected birds. County Health and Human Services is working with DHS to monitor other farm workers.

WI Works for the Weekend, Employment Stays Record High

Wisconsin has reached the seventh month in a row of record-high employment. The Department of Workforce Development says the labor force increased by more than seven-thousand in November, making a record three-million Wisconsinites employed. The state unemployment rate in November was two-point-nine-percent, about more than one-percent lower than the national average.

Funding Set for WI Schools

Wisconsin schools are getting 70-million-dollars to expand libraries and technology. The Board of Commissioners of Public Lands says the funding will be used to buy new books and other educational materials. The money comes from the Common School Fund, which supplies the sole funding for more than 90-percent of public school libraries statewide. The funding will be announced this afternoon at the Brown Deer High School and Middle School library.
