BACON SUMMER COUNT!

  Bean and Bacon has BEEN BACON people happy for years and this year was no different in Augusta, as hundreds of people gathered for the start of the Bean and Bacon festival yesterday. Opening day included a parade, the Augusta car show, softball and volleyball tournaments, and a 5K run-walk, all hosted by the Lion’s Club. Events will continue through July 4th.

BUFFALO CITY FIRE

A 71-year-old man is seriously burned after a garage fire. Authorities say the fire started Friday night at a home on Third Street in Buffalo City. The man who lives in the home received serious burns and was flown to the hospital for treatment. Another person in  the home and a dog were able to escape without injuries. Demonstrators want President Trump’s administration to know they are not OK with his hardline immigration policies.  Thousands of people turned out in downtown Milwaukee and elsewhere in the state-including locally in our area, on Saturday to protest as part of a series of protests nationwide, dubbed “Families Belong Together”. How many clicks does it take to get to the top of the list? “Time” is naming this year’s 25 most influential people on the internet.  People are chosen each year based on their ability to spread news and the global impact they have on social media. The new list includes familiar names like President Trump, but also ranks the students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, and the teenager who started the infamous “Laurel versus Yanny” debate.

LEADING THE WAY FOR LEAVING THE LEAD

Lead the LEAD OUT. That’s the goal as The City of Eau Claire is increasing the amount of money it provides for people to replace lead-lined pipes on their property. The city says around 12-hundred properties in town still have lead-lined pipes, but officials say water quality is not an issue because the water is treated with lime, which  coats the inside of the pipes and adjusts the PH.

COUNTY COURTS COURTING SAFETY IDEAS

Both Eau Claire and Chippewa Counties are looking more closely at security measures in local courtrooms. The discussions are underway, but early ideas from Eau Claire County include having a screening area before entering the courtroom floor to keep out weapons and sharp objects, in Chippewa they are considering adding a courthouse security officer that would sometimes serve as a bailiff.

LAW & RECALL

The static continues in Trempealeau County as the DA, Taavi McMahon says he will continue to fight a recall effort. Osseo Police Chief William Prudlick and Officer Daniel McQuillan are leading the campaign to recall McMahon, saying he is unprepared for court, reluctant to listen to law enforcement, and reducing too many serious charges. McMahon says he’s supported by police, about a dozen district attorneys, and the public.

LABOR (UNION) PAINS

A Supreme Court ruling is affecting Wisconsin labor unions. The five-to-four decision says that “fair-share” fees public workers pay unions for collective bargaining is unconstitutional.  The ruling on an Illinois case strikes down our states exemption for public-safety unions. Wisconsin passed Act 10 in 2011, which severely limited union power, but still allowed “fair-share” payments for public-safety workers.
