“S” IS FOR SCHOOL SAFETY! The Durand-Arkansaw school district is taking steps toward increasing school safety.  The district says it will use a 42-thousand dollar School Safety Grant awarded in June to install shatterproof film on school windows, additional cameras, and radios for staff members.

THE KABAT-KIBOSH STANDS

It’s the Kabat-Kibosh in LaCrosse as Mayor Tim Kabat’s veto of a nearly 50-million dollar expansion project for the La Crosse Center will stand. Less than a month after the mayor killed the proposal, the Common Council failed to get enough votes to override his veto at a meeting lastnight.  Its back to the drawing board for the LaCrosse Center Board as they are meeting today to discuss the next steps in the design process.

SUN PRAIRIE UPDATES

The companies involved in the explosion in Sun Prairie this week say they are cooperating fully with the investigation.   A subcontractor working on a fiber optics project says a crew was at the site of the deadly gas explosion.  Verizon Wireless and a Kansas-based construction company said yesterday that a subcontractor of theirs was working at the site before the explosion that killed firefighter Cory Barr and injured 15 others. HSHS SCAM ALERT!

This week, HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital switchboard received several calls from community members who said they were contacted by someone from the hospital. The scammer said a loved one had been airlifted from the hospital, and now the community member would have to pay the bill with a credit card now or by calling a phone number that appeared on caller ID to be a Sacred Heart number. FALLEN FIREFIGHTER HONORED IN SUN PRAIRIE

We now know the name of the Firefighter killed in Sun Prairie. Corey Barr was killed Tuesday in a gas main explosion at his bar that also injured 15 others-they are all expected to recover. As clean up continues, police are escorting residents into the evacuation zone around the scene of a deadly gas main to retrieve medications and pets.  And here comes more good with a state connection as JJ Watt- the former Badger, is making Wisconsin proud again.

The 31 members of the group are from all over the state and in all parts of the industry. The group’s focus is to address issues facing our state dairy industry, especially low milk prices.

FEDERAL HELP FOR WISCONSIN VETS

Homeless veterans in our state are getting some help from the federal government to find jobs. The U.S. Labor Department announced over 47-million-dollars in funding with nearly 750-thousand-dollars in grants awarded to our state, intended to help homeless vets receive training, apprenticeship opportunities, job search and placement assistance.

THE GATES ARE OPEN!

Get those fishbowls and food flakes ready, The Northern Wisconsin State Fair is underway. The gates opened yesterday and the event kicked off as only the Fair can…which means pig, duck, and goat races, along with the Green Bay Packer Tundra Line and a pedal tractor pull. The fair is taking place in Chippewa Falls and runs through Sunday.

FARM TECH DAYS FIELDS THOUSANDS

Thousands PLOWED their way through Farm Technology Days –including our own Alex and Cora, as that is now underway in Wood County. The big event opened yesterday and features more than 600 exhibits. It is aimed at the agricultural community, showing the newest and greatest technology in the field, and is open to the public.  The gathering runs through tomorrow.
