FUELING UP THE FUTURE

Dane County officials are entering a partnership to turn trash into natural gas.  Dane County Executive Joe Parisi announced yesterday that Kwik Trip will soon start selling fuel made from landfill trash.  Parisi says the project will convert trash and cow manure from the Dane County landfill into compressed natural gas.  That gas will then be sold at 35 Kwik Trip stations in the Midwest.

GAS PRICES PUMP UP

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Wisconsin is up 12-cents from a week ago.  Triple-A says the cost statewide today is two-dollars-and-33-cents, while the national average is two-38-a-gallon.  The lowest prices are posted in the Sheboygan area at two-28.  Drivers in the Pierce-St. Croix County area are paying the most at the pump at two-42-for regular.

PRAYER SCAM HITS WI

A scam involving paying for prayers is hitting Madison and South-Central Wisconsin.  Officials for SSM-St. Mary’s Hospitals in Madison and Janesville are concerned because the robocaller identifies themselves as from ‘St. Mary Prayer Center Ministry.’  SSM says it’s chaplin’s are available for patients without cost and ask anyone who gets a call from ‘St. Mary Prayer Center Ministry ‘ to hang up and call the Consumer Protection Bureau.

MY MKE VS. MIAMI

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers says Milwaukee is Milwaukee, and Miami is Miami.  The governor yesterday said he’s not worried about a report in Politico that says Democratic donors are complaining that Milwaukee is not fancy enough to host the Democratic National Convention next summer.  Evers said Miami may be hurting its chances by running down Milwaukee.  The city is considered the favorite to win the convention, a decision could come in the next few weeks.

BLOOMER POLICE CHIEF SNAGS MORE TROUBLE AFTER HUNTING CONFESSIONS

Bloomer Police Chief Jared Zwiefelhofer is getting himself into more trouble.  According to the Department of Natural Resources, Zwiefelhofer has admitted to shooting and killing a wounded deer with his city-issued AR-style patrol gun.  Zwiefelhofer has also admitted to using bait near a stand and operating a UTV with a loaded gun, charges he pleaded no contest to.  Zwiefelhofer is stepping down as Chippewa County Board Chair next month but will stay on the board as a member.

ST. CROIX MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO SEXUAL ASSAULT

A Saint Croix man accused of child sexual assault has reached a deal with prosecutors.  According to a criminal complaint, a 15-year-old victim with cognitive disabilities claims Ronald Jewett touched her inappropriately daily.  Jewett is pleading guilty in exchange for having a repeated child sexual assault charge dropped.  He’ll be sentenced in April.

EC NORTH SCORES BIG IN EVENT

North High School in Eau Claire is doing its part to promote a positive school culture.  While you were watching the news, you likely saw WEAU report the North and Memorial High Schools Special Olympics basketball teams played an exhibition at halftime during last night’s varsity game.  North called the event, Ending the R-word is a Slam Dunk night.

“WEATHER” WE LIKE IT OR NOT, WINTER CONTINUES

A significant flooding risk is being identified in the Eau Claire area.  The National Weather Service released flood outlook data for the Eau Claire area yesterday.  County Emergency Management says the Chippewa River in Eau Claire has about a 30 percent chance of exceeding flood stage.  A county-wide flood exercise will be held next week in preparation for a worst case event.  But, as we are still shoveling, hauling, and dealing with the white stuff, winter weather is causing damage

WI POLITICAL CLIFF NOTES: TO COURT WE GO

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers isn’t suing to to block the reforms that Republican lawmakers cemented back in December.  Instead, he’s simply not going to defend them in court.  Evers, and Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, yesterday declined to fight a lawsuit filed by the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.  They say they have no duty to defend the laws.  The top Republicans in the state Assembly say the governor is colluding with his political allies to scuttle the reforms.
