LOCAL REACTION TO NATIONAL TRAGEDY

The Eau Claire Jewish community is reacting to the deadly mass shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue.  An active member of the congregation at Temple Sholom in Eau Claire reports that the shooting is the worst tragedy against the Jewish population in U.S. history.  The Chippewa Valley is home to about 40 Jewish households, and some say the increase in Anti-Semitism puts all people at risk.

BUS SAFETY REMINDER

Student Transit officials in Eau Claire are asking for cooperation from drivers after three kids in Indiana were hit and killed by a pickup at a bus stop.  Officials are reminding drivers that they must stop at the activation of the red flashing lights, even if a stop sign is not out.  Bus drivers are also going to be honking their horns if they see a car moving as a signal to children to return to the roadside shoulder.

EC MOM FACES CHARGES

An Eau Claire mom is under arrest, accused of locking a child in a room with deplorable conditions.  Police say 24-year-old Tiffany Endle faces two counts of physical abuse of a child, two counts of intentional child neglect, and disorderly conduct.  The two young children living in the home were given medical attention.

U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin is on the campaign trail in Eau Claire.  The Democratic incumbent was at UW-Eau Claire to meet with students yesterday as part of her RV tour across the state.  Most polls put Baldwin well ahead of Republican rival Leah Vukmir.  Governor Walker is refusing to say whether or not he backs President Trump’s plan to end birthright citizenship for some U.S. born babies, while Tony Evers says he opposes it.  Republican incumbent Walker had made immigration

IRVINE PARK TREE-TING FOR INVASIVE SPECIES

Chippewa County is continuing to fight an invasive species of trees infesting parks and the community.  Officials are treating trees in Irvine Park that are affected by the emerald ash borer.  The invasive beetle kills ash trees by disrupting the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients.  Eradicating the species has been a joint effort between Parks officials and local residents.

DRUG TAKE BACK DAY HITS WI RECORD

Recent drug take back days hit record numbers in our state. Attorney General Brad Schimel announced that Wisconsin had a record breaking event with a preliminary collection of 66,100 lbs. The October 2018 collection is the largest preliminary weight in the history of Wisconsin’s program.  Since 2015, the DOJ has collected and disposed of nearly 470,000 lbs. of unused and unwanted medications.

HARLEY RECALLS BIKES

Harley-Davidson is recalling nearly 180-thousand motorcycles because of a possible leaky clutch.  The company says 26 models from 2017 and 2018 are affected.  Dealers will fix the problem at no charge.  Bike owners can CLICK HERE to check on the Harley-Davidson website to submit their vehicle identification number to see if it’s part of the recall.

CLOCKS TURN BACK, BATTERIES REPLACE

Wisconsin first responders are reminding people it’s not only time to turn back the clocks, but to replace the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as well.  Daylight Saving comes to an end this weekend with clocks set back an hour on Sunday morning.  From 2012 to 2016, there were 54 reported fire deaths in Wisconsin.  The National Fire Protection Association says three of every five home fire deaths in the U.S. result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms

COUPLE KILLED IN POLK COUNTY CRASH

Police are releasing the names of the couple killed in a crash in Polk County.  The county sheriff’s department says 60-year-old Donald Kelly and 54-year-old Robin Kelly were the victims in the crash that occurred around 11:00 on Saturday evening.  Police say the crash is still under investigation, but that it looks like the couple crossed the center line and struck multiple structures before going airborne and landing upside down.
