CHILI COOK-OFF HELPS THE “BRRRR…”

Eau Claire church is celebrating a successful Chili Cook-Off and Mac and Cheese Challenge.  The fundraising event happened yesterday afternoon at the Sacred Heart-St. Patrick Center.  Organizers say 700-dollars was raised for the church’s youth program.  The funds will help students go on trips.

EAU CLAIRE VETERANS PARK MARCHES CLOSER TO REALITY

The Veterans Park is closer to becoming a reality in our area. We are only two meetings away-Firststop will be when it goes to the Eau Claire City Council for final approval this week and then a couple meetings next month and after that the project can move forward with bidding, with construction scheduled to begin this summer. The Eau Claire Veterans Foundation  has raised over $900,000 of the proposed $2.2 million project cost.

KNOCK, KNOCK…JACK FROST CAME TO VISIT

The first major snow storm of the season is hitting Wisconsin hard.  As of Saturday at mid-morning, it dumped anywhere from five to eight inches of snow on the Madison area.  Weather experts say that’s nearly doubled Madison’s snow total for the season.  Even though snow fall has ended, chilly temperatures remain.  Today is expected to be mostly sunny and cold with a high of about 11 degrees.  Winds are predicted to be around 10 miles-per-hour with a wind chill of 10

WOMEN’S MARCH HEATS UP JANUARY IN MADISON

Frigid temperatures aren’t stifling the voices of women and men at Wisconsin’s Women’s March.  Yesterday, about 700 people showed up to the state Capitol to demand equality for women and accountability from the Trump administration.  Women’s Marches were held around the nation yesterday.  But, all of them had one thing in common: a smaller turnout than past years.  Two years ago, over 75-thousand people gathered at the Wisconsin state Capitol for a Women’s March following the inauguration of President Trump.  Some are crediting

MADISON DIOCESE CONSIDERING INVESTIGATION INTO SEXUAL ABUSE

The Madison diocese is considering opening a sexual abuse investigation that would name the accused clergy members.  On Friday, spokesman Brent King said staff members at the Madison Diocese were starting to launch the investigation back in November.  But, the unexpected death of Bishop Robert Morlino stalled the effort.  King says Morlino took the abuse scandal very seriously.  King’s comments come after The Green Bay Diocese revealed the names of 46 clergy members accused of sexual abuse of a minor

FEDERAL WORKERS FEELING SHUTDOWN

Federal workers in Madison are feeling the affects of the partial government shutdown.   The Forest Products Laboratory employs about 140 people at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus.  It’s also one of the many federal research centers which has benched their employees amid the shutdown which has gone on for nearly a month.  The deputy director of Forest Products Laboratory says there’s a Ph.D at the facility who has resorted to cleaning houses to make ends meet during the shutdown. PENSION PAYMENTS COULD DROP FOR SOME IN WI

Retired Wisconsin public employees may see a drop in their pension payments.  The State of Wisconsin Investment Board reported a decrease in its preliminary 2018 year-end returns.  That means for the first time in six years, those receiving pension payments in the state could see their check take a small hit.  A spokesman for the Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds says he anticipates either no change or a 0.5-percent decrease in the annuity payments for those participating in the Core Trust Fund.

PUTTING THE “WI” IN WINTER…WARNING IN PARTS OF THE STATE

A winter storm warning is in effect for Madison.  The warning covers Dane, Iowa, Grant, Richland, Jefferson, Crawford, Lafayette, Green, Rock, and Walworth Counties.  Juneau, Adams, Sauk, Columbia and Dodge counties are under a winter weather advisory.  The winter storm warning is in effect until 6:00 am this morning.  Weather experts say snow will then end, but extreme cold will remain.  The next chance for snow is Tuesday.

FOXCONN FALLS SHORT

Foxconn is falling short of their job creation quota for 2018.  Foxconn spokesman Louis Woo says the company only created 178 full-time jobs.  This number is significantly lower than the 260 minimum required in a state contract with the company.  That means the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer will not receive any tax incentives this year.  In 2017, the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation helped broker that tax incentive deal.

SHOPKO STRUGGLES

A notice submitted to the state from Shopko reveals how the retailer struggled to stay afloat.  The notice, sent to the Department of Workforce Development yesterday, says when the two Shopko stores in Madison close in April, only 63 workers will be laid off.  This number is a lot lower than previously reported numbers when the two stores first opened in the 1980’s.  During that time, the stores employed nearly 600 workers.
