CINDER CITY OF FIRE WITH APPLICANTS

Twenty-six people are applying to be the new superintendent of the Altoona School District.  The Leader-Telegram reports a meeting will be held tonight where school board members will discuss the applicants in an attempt to whittle them down to six or seven candidates.  Those should then be cut down to three finalists by the end of tomorrow who will each spend time with the district at the end of the month getting interviewed.  A finalist could be chosen as soon

CREWS PREP HILL FOR SKIERS

The Eau Claire Ski Club is celebrating 50 years at Silver Mine Hill this week.  The club is hosting the 133rd annual Silver Mine Invitational this Friday and Saturday in Eau Claire.  About 50 to 60 of the top skiers from around the country and the world are expected to compete as part of the five hills tour and U.S. Cup tournament series.  Practice jumps start Wednesday and competition is set to begin Friday.

THE BUCKS STOP HERE

The roof of the Bradley Center in Milwaukee is no more.  It was blown to pieces yesterday in a controlled explosion.  The Milwaukee Bucks tweeted that the arena will be completely demolished sometime this summer.

CLOSS CELEBRATION CONTINUES

The celebration continued this weekend as a church in Cameron is celebrating the return of Jayme Closs.  It was a full house at St. Peter Catholic Church in Cameron yesterday as members said prayers of thanks.  Church members said their strong and continuous prayers probably helped bring Jayme home.  That church is where Jayme had her first communion and attended Sunday school.  The church plans to hold a praise and gratitude service next Sunday as well, to honor the 13-year-old’s

HOME SWEET NEW HOMES

Eau Claire may be getting several new housing projects.  A total of three projects would add 360 new rental units to the area.  The mix of apartments, senior living and townhomes are just waiting approval from the city.  Eau Claire’s Plan Commission is set to review rezoning requests this evening at the Courthouse.  The City Council will then vote on the projects next week.

SILVERMINE TURNS GOLD!

Preparations are underway for Eau Claire’s 133rd Silver Mine Invitational.  This year’s theme is “silver mine turns gold” as the Eau Claire Ski Club is celebrating their 50th year at the Silver Mine Hill.  Crews spent yesterday distributing snow around the hill to make conditions ideal for the skiers.  The two-day competition starting Friday will host 50 to 60 of the most talented ski jumpers from around the nation and world.

LOCAL WOMAN HELPS MIGRANTS

An Eau Claire woman is helping migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border.  Last month, Mireya Sigala visited Tijuana where she heard the stories of countless immigrants hoping to seek asylum.  Sigala, who is of Mexican descent, said she thought of her own family when she listened to the hardships the migrants have been through.  Sigala has done extensive work educating others about the Latino community in an effort to promote assimilation between the Eau Claire community and the Latino community.

CLOSS FAMILY KEEPING JAYME CLOSE

Officials in Barron County, Wisconsin are recounting the relief they felt when missing 13-year-old Jayme Closs was found safe.  Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald says many sleepless nights were spent in the eighty-eight days Closs was missing.  But, Fitzgerald says the million-dollar-question of why the kidnapping and homicide happened in the first place has yet to be answered.  Jayme went missing in October after her parents were fatally shot in their Barron County home.  She was found alive on Thursday after escaping

MADISON PROTESTS; NO ARRESTS

Madison police say no arrests were made during dueling protests outside the state Capitol yesterday.  The We the People rally had about 45 attendees, but about 250 counter-protesters showed up.  The We the People advocates showed up with rifles, handguns and ammunition to protest gun control measures that Governor Tony Evers’ administration could pass.  Counter protesters shouted things like “No Trump, no KKK, no racist USA” as they attempted to drown out the We the People speakers.

WI SENATOR TO INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO PAY EMPLOYEES AFFECTED BY SHUTDOWN

Wisconsin Senator Ron Johnson is introducing legislation that would pay essential federal staff amid the ongoing partial government shutdown.  Yesterday, the Oshkosh Republican joined forces with Maine Senator Susan Collins to present the bill.  Under the measure, unappropriated funds would be used to pay about 420-thousand federal workers throughout several agencies who are currently forced to work without pay.  That includes employees with the Coast Guard and departments of Commerce, Homeland Security and Interior.  Roughly 800-thousand federal workers missed their first
