AMBER ALERT STILL IN EFFECT

An AMBER Alert is still in effect in the suspected abduction of two-year-old Noelani Robinson.  Dariaz Higgins is accused of killing the child’s mother Sierra Robinson and wounding another woman Monday when the three were meeting for Higgins to return the toddler to Robinson.  He is believed to have the child with him and is considered armed and dangerous.

GREEN LIGHT FOR ORANGE CONES

State Street Hill will see some new improvements in the near future.  The Eau Claire City Council approved a two-and-a-half million dollar project yesterday to replace multiple water mains and sewer lines as well as changing several intersections to roundabouts.  Officials say the changes will create better traffic flow. Most of the construction is expected to start mid-summer and last roughly six months.  A plan to improve parts of Forest Street are in the works.  The Eau Claire City Council

CHAIRMAN STEPS DOWN AMID SCANDAL

A new chairman is in place on the Chippewa County Board after the former chairman resigned following a scandal.  The board selected former Vice Chair Leigh Darrow yesterday to serve the remainder of Jared Zwiefelhofer’s term.  Records show the former chair and Bloomer Police Chief used his department issued AR-style weapon to illegally shoot a deer outside of gun season last November.  He was cited for several charges and resigned as chair.

OH DEER! WEATHER AFFECTS HERD NUMBERS

Wildlife officials are saying that the rough Wisconsin winter could affect harvest quotas for antlerless deer next fall.  Department of Natural Resources wildlife biologists said yesterday that the winter will have a moderate to severe impact on the spring deer population.  County deer advisory councils around the state are meeting to make early harvest quota recommendations for next fall.

MAN ARRESTED FOR THROWING PUPPIES IN GARBAGE

We now know who is behind dumping a bag of puppies in a garbage at the end of February. Marshfield Police were dispatched to complaint of the sound of kittens coming from a garbage can in the 800 blk of E 4th St. When they arrived, they found 8 newborn puppies which had been thrown away. The bag was removed and the puppies were transported to the Marshfield Area Pet Shelter. 56 yr old Robert Wild from Marshfield was arrested

WI PLANS TO CLOSE LINCOLN HILLS JUVENILE CENTER

Two new juvenile correctional facilities are being built as plans to close Lincoln Hills move forward.  Governor Tony Evers said today a new youth jail will be built in Hortonia in Outagamie County and another in the Milwaukee area.  The governor says the administration is committed to getting kids out of Lincoln Hills, which has been plagued by abuse scandals.

AVERY CASE SEES ANOTHER APPEAL

There’s another appeal before the court in the Steven Avery case.  Lawyers for Avery filed motions yesterday requesting a new trial and a new judge.  Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey are serving life terms for the 2005 murder of photographer Teresa Halbach.  The defense wants a new trial based on some evidence questions.  They want a new judge because current judge Angela Sutkiewicz heard a prior civil case against Avery brought by the Halbach family.

POWERBALL CLIMBS HIGH

The Powerball jackpot continues to climb and is currently at $448 million. That figure is up almost $70 million since last week and marks both the high for 2019 and largest since last October’s “jackpot fever.”  TODAY’S draw is the 22nd since the last Powerball jackpot ($294 million) was won Dec. 26 in New York state. Should a Wisconsin resident win the jackpot, it would be the third time in history (2006 and 2017).
