WI AMONG STATES FUELING LAWSUITS OVER COAL

Wisconsin is among 22 states suing the Trump Administration over the president’s push to allow states to use coal in their power plants once again.  The states almost all have Democratic attorneys general.  The President this week ordered the EPA to allow individual states to decide their own pollution standards for coal plants.  The order rolls-back an Obama-era clean air regulation.

WI MAYORS ADDRESS GUN VIOLENCE

Five Wisconsin mayors are joining colleagues across the country urging lawmakers to take action against gun violence.  The mayors of Madison, Milwaukee, Green Bay, Sheboygan and Wisconsin Rapids all signed on to the effort to close loopholes in background checks and extend the waiting period to purchase firearms.  Over 200 mayors are asking Congressional members to cut their summer break short and return to Washington to work on the issue.  The mayors say whether their city is large or small the impact of gun

Food, beer and the pigskin are all criteria that makes Madison the number one college football town in the nation.  Sports Illustrated has published it’s top ten picks and the Wisconsin capitol beat out Ann Arbor, Knoxville, Austin and Boulder, Colorado to take top honors.  The magazine noted that if it’s too cold to go outside, there’s plenty of good things to eat and drink while enjoying an area they call as picturesque as it gets.

FIRE SENDS WOMAN TO HOSPITAL

On Monday morning, August 12, 2019, at about 2:30 a.m., the Barron County Sheriff’s Department received a call from the homeowner, at 216 30th Street New Auburn, who reported her house was on fire. The homeowner, Tonia Morrison, 45, was subsequently transported with non-life threatening smoke insulation injuries to an area hospital in Eau Claire. TAC-NO BELL, MAN ARRESTED AFTER FAKE ROBBERY

A man is in custody after calling in a fake armed robbery at an Eau Claire Taco Bell.  Police say officers were called to the restaurant on Hastings way last night but they say the robbery report was fake.  A 24-year-old man was arrested at the scene and charged with disorderly conduct.  He hasn’t been identified.

NEW NAME OF OFFICE DOOR

SSM Health’s Wisconsin region has a new president.  SSM Health announced yesterday chief medical officer at Saint Louis-based SSM Doctor Mark Thompson will be the new head of the region.  Thompson’s previous ties to Wisconsin include serving as a University of Wisconsin School of Medicine Public Health residency program director.

ST. CROIX CO. MAN GETS NEW TRIAL

A St. Croix County man convicted of shooting his son last year is getting a new trial.  A judge yesterday ordered prosecutors to try and make their case against Kayle Fleischauer once again.  There are questions about juror misconduct in his original trial.  Police say Fleischauer was drunk and shot his son in April of 2018.  Fleischauer has said all along his son accidentally shot himself.  The new trial is set for February.

EAU CLAIRE LOOKING TO ADD CROSSING GUARDS

It’s not just the kids in Eau Claire who are getting ready to go back to school.  School leaders are finalizing their plans and procedures for the new school year as well.   Eau Claire Superintendent Mary Ann Hardebeck is making a plea for a few more crossing guards this year.  Hardebeck says the more guards the better.  She says Eau Claire schools need at least four more guards to start the year.

SAND MINE CLOSES DOORS

About 40 people in Whitehall are out of a job as another western Wisconsin frac sand mine is closing its doors.  Hi-Crush told the state of Wisconsin recently that it is closing the mine in Whitehall.  Between 35 and 40 people will lose their jobs.  Hi-Crush says the ‘decreased profitability in shipping sand’ is to blame for the mine’s closing.

WI CLIFF NOTES: GOVERNOR EVERS ON TRADE; DAIRY INDUSTRY DIPS

Wisconsin’s governor says farmers in the state are already dealing with low prices and bad weather.  They don’t need a trade war to make things worse.  Governor Tony Evers yesterday wrote a letter to President Trump asking him to end the trade uncertainty that is hurting farmers in the state.  The governor says farmers in Wisconsin want trade not aid, and need healthy trade agreements to make that happen.  On that note, cheesemakers in Wisconsin don’t expect things to get better anytime soon.  The
