PATTERSON CONTINUES TO SERVE SENTENCE OUT OF WI

The man who kidnapped Jayme Closs and killed her parents is now in a New Mexico prison.  A New Mexico Corrections Department employee tells the Las Cruces Sun News that 22-year-old Jake Patterson was transferred from a Wisconsin maximum security prison earlier this month.  Patterson was given a life sentence for shooting both of Closs’s parents to death last October and holding the 13-year-old captive in his cabin for almost three months.

TALL SHIPS SAIL IN TO GREEN BAY

The Tall Ships are in port for the festival in Green Bay.  Ships started arriving earlier this week for the Nicolet Bank Tall Ship Festival underway today.  The festival came through three years ago and businesses near the Fox River have been preparing for its return ever since.  Because of high water under the Tower Drive Bridge some of the ships did have trouble coming into port, but they’re now ready to show off their beauty for the next few

DIP AT THE PUMP

The average cost for regular gas in Wisconsin is down three-cents-a-gallon compared to a week ago.  Triple-A says the average price statewide is two-dollars-and-72-cents today, two-cents below the national average.  Drivers in Racine and Kenosha County are paying the highest average price at the pump at two-79-a-gallon.  The lowest average price is posted in Fond du Lac at two-60-a-gallon for regular, followed by Madison at two-62.

CREWS POWERING UP TO RESTORE POWER

People impacted by storms in Barron County could be left in the dark until next week.  According to the Barron Electric Cooperative, about 250 people living between Cumberland and Turtle lake near Echo, Moon, and Horseshoe Lakes could be without power for another week because of storms last weekend.  It says about 65 crews are working 15-hour days to restore power.  Most people in the Barron and Chetek areas should have power restored.

TUITION FREEZE LAW HITTING THAW?

Wisconsin state lawmakers are considering unfreezing tuition at University of Wisconsin schools.  Tuition has been frozen since 2013 but a Republican-introduced bill would increase tuition each year and cap it no higher than the rate of inflation.  The bill would also lock in the tuition rate students pay their first year for all four years.  However, a majority of lawmakers have been in support of the tuition freeze in the past.

The Dunn County Sheriff’s Office is looking for the owner of a stray goat.   Deputies say a billy was found around the Wheeler Trailer Court Wednesday night and no one has claimed him.  A sheriff’s office employee is taking care of the goat while the office looks for its owner.

CRUNCH TIME FOR APPLE ORCHARDS

This year’s severe weather isn’t having a major impact on the apple crop in west-central Wisconsin.  One apple orchard owner in Eau Claire says the heat and storms have made apple growing more difficult and some apples may not but ready until later this season.  However, he says most are still growing on time.  The harvest is only expected to be delayed by about two weeks.

The One-fest Christian music festival kicks off in Chippewa Falls today.  The three-day festival starts at five o’clock tonight at the Northern Wisconsin State fairgrounds.  The festival features popular Christian groups such as the Newsboys and Francesca Battistelli.  It will conclude with a worship service Sunday morning.

WI FOOD STAMP ENROLLMENT COULD BE AFFECTED BY RULE CHANGE

The state of Wisconsin says 27-thousand people in the state could lose their food stamps if the rules for automatic enrollment are changed.  President Trump wants to limit the flexibility that states have in offering benefits to people who make more than 130-percent of the federal poverty level.  The White House says state’s have abused that flexibility.  DHS’s Jim Jones says the loss estimate is about nine-percent of the nearly 310-thousand people in Wisconsin who are on food stamps.

DRINKING + GUN SHOTS = JAIL FOR EC MAN

An Eau Claire man who shot his friend in the leg after a night of drinking is heading to jail.  A judge yesterday sentenced 35-year-old Anthony Bedard to two months in jail.  Police say he shot his friend in the thigh back in April, though they’ve never said why.  Bedard originally said he never had a gun and never shot anyone.  But security camera footage from the hospital proved that was a lie.
