HIGGINS FACING MILLION DOLLAR BOND

The father of a missing toddler found dead in Minnesota is facing a million dollar bond.  Dariaz Higgins is accused of murder in the shooting and killing of the girl’s mother.  Higgins faces intentional homicide, resisting an officer, and use of a dangerous weapon charges.  He has not been charged in the death of two-year-old Noelani Robinson.

ELIZABETH SMART VISITS BARRON COMMUNITY

Elizabeth Smart is helping the Barron community move forward after the kidnapping and return of Jayme Closs.  A fellow kidnapping survivor and child safety advocate spoke to the community Friday night at Barron High School, sharing her experience on the day marking five months since Closs originally went missing.  Smart was abducted from her Salt Lake City home in 2002 when she was 14, and was missing for nine months.

BETO MEETS BUCKY

Madison is one of several stops 2020 presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke has made on a trip through the Midwest.  The former Texas congressman drew a crowd yesterday morning at Cargo Coffee East, where he spoke about his plans to take on President Trump.  He also discussed the detention of immigrant children at the US-Mexico border. BARNES IN EAU CLAIRE

Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes is headed back to Madison after a visit to Eau Claire.  Barnes joined several small business owners at Red’s Mercantile to hear about what it means to be a female small business owner.  The group also discussed the impact of the Red Letter Grant, which provides female entrepreneurs across Western Wisconsin with start-up capital and networking opportunities.

WISCONSIN SPORTS SHOW REELS IN RECORD CROWD

Eau Claire is getting a look at the newest outdoor sporting equipment following the Wisconsin Sport Show.  The event took place this weekend at the Chippewa Valley Expo Center and included displays and demonstrations.  More than 150 exhibitors showed off items for hunting, fishing, and family recreation.  This was the tenth anniversary of the show and Saturday’s attendance was the largest turnout ever.

WI WATER QUALITY ISSUES ON TAP

State Republicans and Democrats seem to agree that Wisconsin has a water quality issue.   Wisconsin’s Democratic Governor Tony Evers and Republican legislative leaders are coming together in a show of bipartisanship to address industrial farm pollution.  Evers and Republicans have put forward two proposals which call for the state’s growing animal feedlots to pay increased fees.  The effort hopes to raise funds to keep millions of tons of dairy farm manure from polluting drinking water.

CHILD REMAINS FOUND, FATHER IN CUSTODY

Authorities in Milwaukee believe they’ve found the body of a missing two-year-old girl.  Saturday, Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales announced what could be Noelani Robinson’s remains were found wrapped in a blanket near a Minnesota Highway, just south of Minneapolis.  An AMBER Alert was issued for Robinson Monday, after her mother had been killed.  The girl’s father, Dariaz Higgins is in custody as a suspect.  Investigators are now waiting on a formal identification and autopsy report from the medical examiner.

RED AND WHITE GOES GREEN AT WI STATE CAPITOL

Madison-area students are making their stance on climate change known.  On Friday, hundreds of students gathered at the State Capitol for a climate strike.  About one-thousand students walked out of class Friday to partake in the Youth Climate Strike.  They started their march at East High School and walked all the way to the state Capitol, where they held a rally.  The students are calling on folks to support the Green New Deal and are also calling on local school

CASE AGAINST UW OFFICIALS DROPPED; CEPHUS TO STAND TRIAL

Lawyers for UW football player Quintez Cephus are dropping their federal civil rights case against school officials for now.  On Thursday, they dropped the case which alleges that a disciplinary investigation violated his rights.  But yesterday, they said they will refile it after Cephus stands trial for sexual assault.  Last August, Cephus was hit with two allegations of sexual assault filed by separate women.  The two women claim Cephus had sex with them at his apartment while they were too
