VETERANS TRIBUTE TRAIL MARCHES AHEAD

Plans are moving forward for the Eau Claire Veterans Tribute Trail.  The Eau Claire Plan Commission approved the project yesterday, which would run along Forest Street near Phoenix Park.  Monuments for past American wars and a veterans mall are set to be located at the end of the path.  Final approval for the project will be voted on next week by the City Council.

EC MAN STUMBLES ON POT O’ GOLD

An Eau Claire man is the winner of 200-thousand dollars in the lottery.  Officials say David Beck won the money Friday in the Pot of Gold Crossword.  He purchased his winning ticket at the Kwik Trip on Brackett Avenue in Eau Claire, which will receive four thousand dollars for its sale.

BOND SET FOR THREE ACCUSED IN DEATH OF 7 YEAR OLD BOY

Bond is set for three people accused in the death of a seven-year-old boy in Manitowoc County.  Timothy Hauschultz, Tina McKeever-Hauschultz and fifteen-year-old Damien Hauschultz are all charged in the death last spring of Ethan Hauschultz.  The boy was found beaten and buried in the snow.  Bond for the three suspects range from 75 to 150-thousand-dollars.

WI DNR INVESTIGATES BALD EAGLE DEATH

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is investigating the illegal shooting of a bald eagle.  The DNR is asking for the public’s help with the investigation.  The eagle was found on private property off Randolph Street in Mishicot in early December and taken for treatment, but died from its injuries.  The eagle may have been shot while feeding at one of the nearby rivers.

BALDWIN TAKES AIM AT RX COSTS

Senator Tammy Baldwin says she’s bringing a woman battling MS to tomorrow’s State of the Union address.  Baldwin says today Diane Whitcraft was taking the same medication for more than 23 years when prescription costs jumped to a point she could no longer afford.  She stopped taking the medication in 2017.  Baldwin says she’s heard from countless Wisconsinites who can’t afford the medications they have relied on for years and Whitcraft is an example that lower prescription drug costs are necessary.

WI COMPANY UNDER INVESTIGATION

State records show Tyco Fire Products knew firefighting foam was contaminating groundwater years before the company was forced to investigate.  The Journal Sentinel says today the Marionette company knew for about four years that the contamination had extended past it’s testing boundaries.  In 2017 the company suspended spraying foam products outdoors and began providing bottled water to residents whose private wells may have been affected.  There have been some studies that suggests the chemicals in the foam can lead to

MAN FACING TRIAL FOR DEATH OF INFANT DAUGHTER

A 33-year-old man has his trial date set in a case involving the death of his three-month-old daughter.  Haugen resident Curtis Strand will stand trial on June 17th on a first-degree reckless homicide charge in the death of Haeven Strand-Dostal in 2017.  The girl died of a head injury and Strand claims she fell off his knee and hit the floor but a medical examiner says her injury required more force than that.  Strand is facing up to 25 years

TWO WOMEN IN CUSTODY AFTER DRUG BUST

Two women are in custody after police say they were found with methamphetamine in Eau Claire.  According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, troopers stopped a vehicle driven by Salina Goodwin and Crystal Oquist on Interstate-94 yesterday afternoon for a traffic violation.  A K-9 then led the troopers to a duffel bag that allegedly had about seven-and-a-half kilograms of meth in it.  The two were arrested and a four-year-old in the car was placed into human services care.

DRUG ADDICTION TAKES CENTER STAGE

A former methamphetamine user from Whitewater is speaking about drug addiction and recovery in Rusk County tonight.  You may have seen this on TV as well, as WEAU reports a free meal will be held at Miner Theater in Ladysmith around 5:45 before a presentation by Matt Jablonsky.  Jablonsky used meth for 13 years but stopped two years ago and plans to discuss his addiction and the struggles he faces in recovery.

UNION RANCH TO HOST HORSE EVENT

Indian relay horse racing is coming to the Remington Ranch in Union this summer.  You might have seen this if you were paging through The Leader-Telegram. Indian relay horse racing features six competitors riding horses bareback around a track before jumping off onto another horse two different times.  According to event organizer Extreme Thunder USA, the event will be on the evenings of August 21st, 22nd, and 24th.  It’s expected to pay out 250-thousand dollars in prize money.
